The Virginia Heart Attack Coalition (VHAC) is pleased to share updates from the EMS Education (formerly ECG Education) Workgroup, a VHAC-led collaborative focused on advancing cardiovascular education related to pre-hospital clinical assessment, management, and transport.

The workgroup has demonstrated strong engagement and clear direction, with leadership and momentum supported by workgroup champions Bob Page, M.Ed., NRP (Edutainment Consulting and Seminars, LLC) and Yasmin Ahmady, NRP, AAS (Prince William Department of Fire and Rescue). Their efforts, along with active participation from EMS clinicians, educators, and system partners, are helping shape meaningful, field-relevant educational content.

Key updates include:

Workgroup Name: EMS Education Workgroup

The workgroup was previously titled ECG Education to reflect its initial focus on foundational ECG education. As the work has progressed, it has become clear that effective pre-hospital cardiovascular care requires a broader educational lens that extends beyond ECG interpretation alone. The transition to the EMS Education Workgroup reflects an expanded, but still focused, scope that includes clinical assessment, decision-making, and transport considerations while supporting a more comprehensive approach to pre-hospital cardiovascular care.

Upcoming Education – 12-Lead ECG Course

Megan Vaughan (Bon Secours) will deliver the 12-Lead ECG course developed by the EMS Education Workgroup at the Virginia Fire Rescue Conference in February. This course was collaboratively designed through the workgroup to reflect real-world EMS practice, with a focus on practical application and clinical relevance in the pre-hospital setting. Its selection for presentation at a statewide conference highlights the value of the workgroup’s efforts and its commitment to producing high-quality, EMS-focused cardiovascular education.

Next Course Development – Input Needed

To help guide the next course developed by the EMS Education Workgroup, collaborative members and partners are asked to complete a brief survey to rank proposed course topics. Input from EMS clinicians, educators, medical directors, and health system partners is essential to ensuring future education reflects shared priorities and supports effective pre-hospital cardiovascular care. Please use the button below to participate.

We appreciate the continued engagement and collaboration of EMS clinicians, educators, medical directors, healthcare and quality professionals across the collaborative. The EMS Education Workgroup remains committed to developing practical, field-relevant cardiovascular education that supports pre-hospital assessment, management, and transport.

The workgroup meets on a bi-monthly basis, with the next meeting scheduled for March 24.

New participants are welcome to join the workgroup, and those interested are encouraged to use the link below to register and attend the upcoming meeting.
