Introducing the VHAC Cardiogenic Shock Case Conference
The VHAC Shock Workgroup is pleased to introduce the VHAC Cardiogenic Shock Case Conference, a dedicated name for the case-based learning component of the Workgroup’s ongoing efforts.
The VHAC Shock Workgroup will continue its broader work focused on cardiogenic shock systems of care, protocols, data, quality improvement, and collaboration among hospitals and healthcare professionals across Virginia. The VHAC Cardiogenic Shock Case Conference provides a consistent forum for participating organizations to share real-world cases, discuss key clinical and operational decision points, and learn from one another through case-based discussion.
Learning Through Real Cases
Cardiogenic shock cases can involve complex decisions, evolving patient conditions, multiple clinical teams, transfers between facilities, and differences in available resources.
The Case Conference provides an opportunity to look at those experiences together.
Presenting teams may highlight topics such as:
Recognition and initial management of cardiogenic shock
Escalation and reassessment decisions
Mechanical circulatory support
Transfer and referral considerations
Multidisciplinary communication
Systems-of-care challenges
Processes that worked well
Opportunities identified through case review
The purpose is not to present a “perfect” case. Cases that raised questions, presented challenges, or resulted in lessons learned can be particularly valuable for group discussion.
The conference is intended to support professional dialogue, shared learning, and continued improvement within Virginia’s cardiogenic shock system of care.

The next VHAC Cardiogenic Shock Case Conference will be held:
Thursday, October 8, 2026 at 6:00 PM
Presenting Organization: UVA / Physician Lead: Rajan Patel, MD
UVA will present a cardiogenic shock case for review and discussion with participating VHAC members and clinical partners.
We look forward to the discussion and to continuing to build participation from organizations throughout the Commonwealth.
Have a Case to Share?
The VHAC Shock Workgroup welcomes hospitals and clinical teams interested in presenting during a future Case Conference.
Cases may focus on a challenging clinical course, an important decision point, an escalation or transfer experience, a systems issue, or another experience that could contribute to shared learning.
Presenting a case is also an opportunity to bring questions to colleagues and hear how other organizations approach similar challenges.

Together, these discussions can help participants from across Virginia better understand practices across organizations, identify areas of variation, share lessons learned, and continue conversations around strengthening cardiogenic shock systems of care.
