Driving Standardization and Insight Across Virginia
The VHAC Pulmonary Embolism Response (PERT) Protocol is a new statewide framework developed by the Virginia Heart Attack Coalition (VHAC) PE Response Workgroup, a multicenter collaborative led by Dr. Michael Kelley of Carilion Clinic. Released October 8, 2025, this protocol was built through shared expertise and real-world feedback from hospitals across Virginia to streamline the recognition and management of acute pulmonary embolism.
Key Features
Rapid Activation Criteria — Clear, evidence-based triggers for initiating the PERT response
Unified Care Pathway — Standardized workup and treatment recommendations based on patient risk and renal function
Defined Team Roles — Seamless coordination between ED, hospitalist, critical-care, and interventional teams
Statewide Consistency — Aligns institutions under a shared model for PE management and outcome reporting
NEW: VHAC PE Data Collection Form
Collect. Analyze. Improve.
Alongside the clinical protocol, the VHAC PE Response Workgroup has launched the VHAC PE Data Collection Form — a secure, web-based submission tool for participating hospitals. This form enables consistent case reporting following each PERT activation to support real-time analytics and continuous improvement.
Purpose
Facilitate statewide trend analysis on PE presentation, treatment, and outcomes
Identify opportunities for system-level improvement and targeted education
Strengthen quality metrics and inform future research initiatives
Participation Encouraged
VHAC member institutions and clinical teams are encouraged to use the form following each PERT activation. The aggregated data will drive measurable improvements in coordination, timeliness, and patient outcomes across the Commonwealth.
Together, the VHAC PERT Protocol and Data Collection Form mark a major step forward in Virginia’s commitment to standardized, data-driven pulmonary embolism care.
