The Virginia Heart Attack Coalition (VHAC) is proud to announce the release of the Pre-Hospital STEMI Data Definitions, developed by the VHAC ED Bypass Clinical Workgroup. These definitions mark a critical step in aligning STEMI care across EMS agencies and health systems throughout the Commonwealth.
Effective pre-hospital STEMI care depends on timely identification, accurate cath lab activation, and coordinated system protocols. By standardizing key terms like Overcall, Undercall, Correct Call, and Direct to Cath Lab (ED Bypass), this document creates a shared clinical language to improve:
Communication between EMS and hospital teams
Performance measurement across systems
Quality of care through reduced delays and unnecessary activations
Patient outcomes through more efficient care pathways
These definitions follow the clinical decision-making framework of the PreAct STEMI Algorithm, as developed by the American Heart Association’s Mission: Lifeline Program (Kontos et al., 2020), and visually supported in the accompanying algorithm graphic.
This effort reflects VHAC’s commitment to improving pre-hospital cardiac care and
strengthening collaboration across Virginia’s STEMI care systems.
